Art Installations : Design week Milan 2023

Travel

Design Week Milan, also known as Salone del Mobile and Fuorisalone, is the world's largest and most prestigious design and furniture fair. Milano Design Week has made Milan the world design capital. It is a series of interconnected events that take over the entire city with installations, lectures, temporary exhibitions, and pop-ups every year in April. Showcase of the latest innovations and trends in furniture, lighting, textiles, and decorative items attracts design lovers worldwide. This week is the absolute must-attend and must-visit event for all design students in Milan. It's like a privilege we must exploit.

I would like to document a few of the most exciting and impactful art installations of the Design Week Milan 2023—

1. YOOX: Starting with the most expected but the most underrated one. YOOX is an online retail company with a wide array of products by the best Italian and international designers. For this year's Milan Design Week, YOOX presented THE COLOUR SQUAD - Designing Tomorrow Together, a project in which creatives, graffiti artists, and performers bring to life their interpretations of the “Future Laboratory”. This was the most therapeutic one. They held it in a big warehouse with all the walls painted white. They had every size canvase along with posca markers and acrylic paints for literally anyone and everyone who entered the event. By the end of the week, it looked like a place where artists were born.

2. Louis Vuitton: The pavilion by MARC FORNES is the latest version of nomadic architecture to be presented by Maison during Milan Design Week. The project resembles a living entity that has organically bubbled up from the courtyard of Palazzo Serbelloni. The ultra-thin structure is composed of over 1,600 uniquely shaped and patterned anodized aluminium sheets, some as thin as 1 millimeter. Visiting the structure wasn't like anything less than visiting a wonder.

3. Les Eaux Primordiales (Perfume manufacturer): This one was an olfactory and sensory installation at Alcova in collaboration with DWA design studio, quite different from most of them. The wooden framework resembling factory chimneys contained scent-infused ceramics by Natascia Fenoglio. Unglazed ceramics were bathed in 8 different notes and kept in glass containers for visitors to smell.

4. Patriarchy kills (love): Base Milano held an extensive program of events entitled We Will Design with Cancel Patriarchy, a large-scale installation by Claire Fontaine. The installed was ‘Patriarchy kills love’ These words as LED lights but the last word ‘love’ blinks in a periodic manner leaving us with ‘Patriarchy kills’ and ‘Patriarchy kills love’. This installation stirs emotions and social experiences and brings sensitive issues to an architectural space.

Design Week Milano 2023 was quite an impactful event in my product design journey. No idea is less important and there’s no innovation without experiments!

Ps. The installation displayed as the blog display image ‘Divided Layers’ was done by Daniel Arsham For Kohler at Design Week Milano 2022
