Lighting: Milano Design Week 2023

Travel

We're about to stroll through the dazzling world of lighting fixtures at Milan Design Week 2023. Imagine walking into a space where the lights aren't just functional but are practically works of art themselves.

I am going to document a few of the gems I stumbled upon at the Fiori Salone—

ANGELO STONE (KARTELL)

Angelo Stone is the culmination of Starck and Kartell's work on light. Pure technology takes shape, a mysterious light illuminates the lampshade using an LED positioned on the base. Form and substance, light and light source merge to illuminate the environment through the play of reflections of the high-tech glass. It is not just a new lamp but a new aesthetic of light.

Wax, Stone, Light

by Linde Freya Tangelder builds upon the original idea of sculptural blocks positioned precariously one atop another in a seemingly unstable architectural column.

The designer experiments with glass to discover the many facets of this material. The collection comprises five totem-like columns of different sizes made out of cubes of glass blown by Murano artisans into cast-iron molds. The components, stacked vertically one atop another, are joined by a custom-made center LED tube that illuminates the entire piece with a warm light, thanks to the ivory white or smoke grey finish.

Rock lighting

by Lindsey Adelman

Lindsey is known for her experimental objects. This exhibition is the first release of one-of-a-kind Mobiles, Cages, and Rock Lights incubated in LaLAB—a new platform for experimental work without agenda at Studio. Raw stone silhouettes shine in Rock Lights, with smoked glass blobs that slump over selenite, jasper, and pyrite, mixing a refined, man-made material with a wholly natural one. The contrast and the equilibrium between the 2 materials make these lights most interesting.

Tratti - Tooy

Cara\Davide

A sculptural and modular lighting system, it can adapt to any type of environment: discreetly linear or imposing itself in space as a large light installation. Lightweight and versatile, it is made of 3D-printed nylon powder. TOOY lamps are decorative elements with a strong aesthetic sense - simple in apparence, though highly sophisticated.

DRAGA and AUREL

Draga & Aurel have produced a special project for Nilufar Gallery: ‘Space Couture’, a bright and dazzling furniture collection with vivid colors and reflective glossiness. The result is a capsule of furniture that almost transcends time and a fun and carefree atmosphere that glorifies a playfully casual and lighthearted way of life, symbolized by the premiering Sabot armchair. Shiny and reflective, coated in laminates and glossy varnish, this piece is emblematic of a collection that extols a zest for living.

Flower tower by atelier biagetti

The Flower Tower is an infinite column of light, a metaphor for our inner light, a luminous landmark, and a celestial totem. The title itself is a positive message about a possible transcendental futuristic paradise that gives us a sense of liberty and of a clean, fresh unprejudiced equilibrium with the natural environment and the planet.

Thank you for reading yet another Milano Design Week appreciation blog. In my defense, it's just that there's too much content that's interesting enough to share.

Hope you liked this bit too! Let me know what you think in the comments below or email me.

See you soon

P.S. - the lighting fixtures used for the display picture of the blog are carved wooden sculptures, Cor by Tom Fereday. Find out more about them with this link —
