Healthy Space Design

5 senses & more

Healthy (adj.)

: Showing Physical, mental, and/or emotional well-being “I feel fit & healthy”

Healthy space (adj.)

: Provides sufficient natural light, sufficient fresh air, away from sound pollution and harmful elements.

We, humans, have a deep connection with nature & have been collecting stimuli responses since we were organisms. We have evolved on nature’s inputs, now we are in the need to reconnect!

Circadian rhythm: Our sleep-wake cycle depends highly on natural light. We need to bring optimum natural light inside our homes and office spaces. People in regions with more daylight tend to overwork themselves leading to a disturbed sleep-wake cycle.

Noise: Many of us live in cities and noise pollution is a part of our day-to-day life. We may never get a quiet environment even at night. These stimuli affect our ability to concentrate (especially in children) & are anxiety-inducing. To create a sound environment we may need to use clever acoustic planning & dampers, and barriers.

Breath: Air pollution is no news, it’s been increasing exponentially over the decade. The answer has always been the same - plants, natural air filters. Houseplants are the way to go for indoors- Snake plants, Pothos, Spider plants, Peace Lilly, Rubber plants, etc

Ambiance: Monotony is one of the pains of life. Textures and colors are here to help you make it interesting for daily life. However, many bright colors are not recommended as they act as stimulants for Autism. Patterns are too welcome in an optimum amount. Using a different variety of materials is a way to go.

The Intangible: We are not only physical beings, fortunately, we do also depend on concepts, and relations. We are connected with each other by faith, nature, art, love, humanity, etc. We need to make space for it in our homes and in our hearts for all-around healthy living.

These are some things to consider when you are designing or especially redesigning your home. As our home state impacts our health everyday. If you have more suggestions, do not hesitate to contact:)
