Guide to your sustainable life: Chapter I

Sustainable vs Eco-friendly

What is sustainability?

It is simply maintaining a certain level or rate. But for this blog, we are going to discuss sustainability in our daily lives. It is all about how we treat energy, how we come to acquire it, how do we convert it & how do we let it go.

For example,  Straws

  1. Life of plastic: 200 years Life of paper: 5-10 years Life of metal: 20 years

  2. Decomposes: 200 years Decomposes: 6 weeks Decomposes: 50 years

  3. 0% recyclability 0% recyclability 100% recyclability

  4. 1-time use 1-time use Till you lose them!

  5. Not Sustainable Eco-Friendly Sustainable

In conclusion, Metal straws are sustainable because the ratio of use & recycling is much less than plastic and paper.

How is it different from eco-friendly?

When we refer to eco-friendly products we are saying we can dispose of them without the guilt of harming the earth because they decompose, but have we ever asked in how much time? These products still go into the landfill where they may or may not compose properly,  Was it worth its use? On the other hand, sustainability takes care of products’ whole life cycle from acquiring raw materials until the final disposal.

Why do we need sustainability?

We have been using certain products since we were young without knowing their environmental, social, & economic impact on the country & the world! Now as we move forward into the 21st century, these impacts have started affecting us directly. We have been told over &over again to reduce, reuse &recycle, though it’s still not as much in practice as it should be. That’s why we should start at the start & refuse to use non-sustainable products!

How to begin your sustainable life !?

So here are some products that can easily be replaced with sustainable ones in our daily lives:

1 What we use 2 Ecofriendly option 3 Sustainable replacement

I love to talk about this topic particularly because there’s always new information and you get to read about amazing people who work towards providing people with sustainable options. Next time I’ll make a list of brands that have sustainability as their main design component. If you have any suggestions don’t hesitate to talk to me :)
